History of Wollongong airport
The history of the Wollongong airport dates back to the World War II. In 1962, Shellharbour Municipal Council was given the ownership of the aerodrome under the Commonwealth Aerodrome Local Ownership Plan. Many charter and training facilities were in operations between the year 1970 to 1990.
During 1998 the current terminal building was constructed along with the improvement of the navigational aids. Later in 2005 upgrade work of the main runways was undertaken to facilitate the operations of aircrafts of 25 tonnes. The RPT service to and from Melbourne commenced on June 2005. The service was provided by QantasLink. Later in 2008 the service was withdrawn with the increase in fuel cost.
