The Launceston Airport was earlier known as Western Junction Aerodrome and was first used in 1930. In 1962 a major redevelopment of the airport was planned and approved. The development work began shortly and included strengthening of all pavements, extension of runway, and later building a new terminal building.

The renovated airport was officially reopened under the name of Launceston Airport in 1962. In October 1982 again the runway was upgraded to accommodate a standard Boeing 727. In 1998, the Launceston Airport in Australia was privatized and is now owned by a group known as Australia Pacific Airports (Launceston) Pty. Ltd, which is a partial subsidiary of Australia Pacific Airports Corporation, who owns the Melbourne Airport.
