The Australia Zoo in Sunshine Coast, Queensland was founded as Beerwah Reptile Park in the year 1970 by Bob and Lyn Irwin. Bob Irwin was a world-famous herpetologist, who is known for pioneering the act of keeping and breeding of reptiles. His wife Lyn was an initiator of caring and rehabilitating sick and injured wildlife in southeast Queensland.

After Bob and Lyn Irwin, the park was handed over to their son Steve. A decade later, the park was renamed as Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park and the extent of the park was doubled by the purchase of another four acres. In the year 1987, the Crocodile Environmental Park was opened to protect saltwater crocodiles. By the 1990s the park became renowned for its display of crocodile feeding within the park.

Steve Irwin took over the management of the zoo in 1991. In 1992 the park finally got its present name. Currently, the zoo maintains ever a 1000 animals with the services of 550 staff.

The Australia Zoo, Sunshine Coast has been awarded the Australian Tourism Awards for 2003-2004 in the category of Major Tourist Attraction. Australia Zoo Retail has also won the Tourism Retailing Award from Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.
