Queensland Cultural Center


Located on the banks of the Brisbane River, the city of Brisbane is the state capital of Queensland in Australia. Surrounded by the Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range in south-eastern belt of Queensland, it is basically a mountainous land, marked by several ranges like Whites Hill, Mount Gravatt, Mount Coot-tha and Stephens Mountain. The Queensland Cultural Center is situated in South Bank and consists of State Library of Queensland, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.

Earlier called the Public Library of Queensland, the State Library of Queensland was founded in 1896. A promoter of and an associate with public libraries across Queensland it consists of a major portion of Queensland's documentary legacy, important reference and research works.

Opened in 1985, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre contains some of Brisbane's leading theatres - Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall, Cremorne Theatre and the Playhouse. Theatrical performances of highest standard are presented here. It basically showcases the cultural aspects of the Australian citizens.

Queensland Museum, an important part of the Queensland Cultural Center was established in 1862 but only after changes of a series of different premises, it shifted to the present venue in 1986.

Founded in 1895, the Queensland Art Gallery finally moved to its present position in 1982. Adjacent to the Queensland Museum, it is a visual arts institute and a principal art museum. The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art complements the Queensland Art Gallery.

Another section of the Queensland Cultural Center, the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art was inaugurated in 2006. It preserves mostly the contemporary works of the Queensland Art Gallery.

A pedestrian bridge over the Cultural Centre Bus Station links the various buildings of Queensland Cultural Center. Numerous shops, cafes and eateries make your trip to the place all the more smooth.
