Art Gallery of South Australia

A visit to a city remains incomplete without delving into the history of the place. And what better way to know a country than to learn about its art and culture! A popular tourist attraction in Adelaide, halfway between Kintore Avenue and Frome Road on the cultural hot spot of North Terrace in Adelaide is the premiere arts institution of South Australia. The Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide has the largest art collection at Australia after Victoria. Established in 1881, it is famous for its fine collections of European and Asian art along with indigenous Australian art of which the best known forms are rock art and bark painting.

Besides showcasing the nation's art history through various paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide has a large European collection which ranges from the late fifteenth century to contemporary art, also showcasing British art. The collections from Cambodia, China, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand constitute the Asian collection. The gallery bookshop sells reproduction prints of the paintings, and an interested individual could place an order with the bookshop. It also has a good selection of books, gifts, crafts, jewelry and posters.

The Gallery is open on all days of the year except on Christmas Day. You could walk in anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and take a look at the carefully preserved paintings. Guided tours are conducted daily at 11 am and 2 pm, and a visit to the gallery's permanent collection is free of charge. The gallery organizes a wide range of activities including talks, lectures and films. Special activities for family and children are also arranged by the gallery.

To absorb the beauty of the surroundings, tired travelers could visit the Art Gallery Restaurant overlooking the courtyard and the lawns. Sandwiches and an a la carte menu and a list of South Australian wine make for interesting refreshments after a long tour of the gallery.

The gallery was established in 1881 and has preserved the Aboriginal Art form since then within its Victorian walls. Besides the special activities that are organized, exhibitions are also held regularly on different artists and their work. Art Gallery of South Australia is one of the places to visit in Adelaide for the art lovers and the casual tourists as well.
